Title:Acoustic Metasurface

Summary: Manipulating sound waves is key in applications such as ultrasound imaging and nondestructive testing. In this talk, I will report the concept of acoustic metasurface, which is a novel family of wavefront shaping devices with planar feature and ultra-thin thickness. In the past three years, we firstly conceived the concept of acoustic metasurface and demonstrated the capabilities of tuning the phase shift fully and freely. With suitable phase profile, a metasurface modulates sound energy from a single source and steer the emergent wave field in a desired way. Significantly, this metasurface does not itself contain any source of sound, unlike a conventional phased array with many individual active sources. This concept is therefore notably appealing for its simplicity, low cost, and good acoustic performance. I will also show some intriguing perspectives of metasurfaces.
