Introduction of Intelligent Medical Ultrasound Lab

Intelligent Medical Ultrasound Lab of Fudan University was founded in the 1970s by Academician Wang Weiqi and is currently led by Professor Ta Dean. The research group currently comprises 5 professors (including 4 national-level talents), 1 associate researcher, 1 adjunct professor from overseas, 2 research assistants, and over 100 postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, and master's students.

For two decades, Professor Ta Dean has led the team in "daring to tackle hard nuts", focusing on the research mainline of Ultrasound Fundamental Theory ⇌ Ultrasound Diagnosis/Treatment Methods ⇌ Novel Instrument Development ⇌ Achievement Translation & Application. They have broken through bottlenecks and application forbidden zones in bone ultrasound diagnosis and treatment technologies, opening up new prospects for multimodal ultrasound diagnosis/treatment technology and instrument application research!

The team's main research interests include:

1. Intelligent Medical Ultrasound: Medical information and image processing, functional ultrasound diagnosis and imaging, ultrafast/super-resolution ultrasound imaging, artificial intelligence applications, multimodal ultrasound/photoacoustic detection, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound therapy, ultrasound brain/neuromodulation, full-wave inversion and inverse problem solving, etc.;

2. Acoustic Metamaterials and Device Applications: Physical acoustics, topological acoustics, acoustic functional devices based on artificial microstructures, anomalous acoustic phenomena and their manipulation, novel ultrasound diagnosis/treatment applications based on acoustic metamaterials, etc.;

3. Medical Diagnosis/Treatment Instruments and Systems: Intelligent medical ultrasound diagnosis/treatment systems, multimodal ultrasound imaging systems, intelligent health monitoring systems, flexible wearable medical systems, multimodal brain-computer interfaces and intelligent brain-computer systems.

Fudan University Intelligent Medical Ultrasound Innovation Team is affiliated with the State Key Laboratory of Integrated Chips and Systems, the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Medical Imaging and Computer-Assisted Surgery, among others. The team has successively undertaken over 50 national and provincial-level scientific research projects, including the National Key R&D Program, the Major Scientific Research Instrument Project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), key projects, NSFC Distinguished Young Scholars (Youth Sci. Fund A), NSFC Excellent Young Scholars (Youth Sci. Fund B), National Youth Thousand Talents, key international cooperation projects, general programs, Shanghai Explorer Program, Shanghai Rising-Star Program, and Shanghai Action Plan for Scientific and Technological Innovation. They have won over 20 important awards such as the World Pioneer Award in Medical Ultrasound, the Second Prize of National Invention Award, the Second Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award of the Ministry of Education, the Second Prize of Shanghai Natural Science Award, the Gold Award of Outstanding Inventions in the Shanghai Outstanding Invention Selection Contest, the Gold Medal of Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions, and the Special Prize of University Exhibition Section at China International Industry Fair . In the past 10 years, the group has published over 400 SCI papers in top journals including Science, Nature Communications, Physical Review Letters, Advanced Science, and Medical Image Analysis, filed over 100 invention patents, achieved 3 scientific research achievement transformations, co-authored 6 books, and participated in compiling 3 textbooks.
